The Challenge
Galliford Try are an old client of ours who we’ve engaged with on some truly incredible projects over the years. However, we hadn’t teamed up with them for some time when out of the blue they got in touch about capturing their latest project. The project in question is the ‘North-East Melton Mowbray Distributor Road’. This is a major road scheme aimed at reducing congestion in Melton Mowbray town centre, as well as supporting growth in local employment and enabling local housing delivery.
They requested that we timelapse their progress along the route. After further discussion they also wanted some on the ground and drone filming of a key milestone in the project. This set the stage for us to capture the lift of 9 bridge beams which form the foundation for a major bridge structure along the bypass route.
So the challenge here is to produce a captivating piece of media showcasing this pivotal point in the project using a variety of timelapse, ground filming and aerial drone footage.
The Approach
To capture as much action as possible we decided on one filming operative and one timelapse engineer to come to site.
Firstly, our engineer constructed one of our high specification timelapse systems in view of the bridge and crane. The timelapse system acted as an insurance policy, ensuring we captured every beam lift. Our filming operative remained on site for the duration of the work, recording dynamic footage of the bridge beam lifts. They utilised a variety of equipment to vary the footage captured.
Our operative used the DJI Mini 4 Pro to capture stunning 4k aerial footage of the crane lifts. Furthermore, our operative attached GoPros to the crane to get some point of view lifting shots. The GoPros we use also have a timelapse feature. Our operative deployed these GoPro’s around the work site to capture alternative timelapse angles of the beam lifts.
As usual the bulk of the footage was filmed on the Canon R5 mirrorless camera in dynamic 4k resolution. Our operative mixed handheld footage with smooth gimbal camera movements to keep the footage engaging.
The Result
The morning after the work was complete our editor began cutting the footage together. They took time to form a well paced edit showing a great balance of beam lifting and on the ground workers. We sent the first draft to Galliford Try and they were delighted with it. We will continue to work with Galliford Try on this project, recording timelapse for the duration of the road route.
