The Challenge
The Rail Staff Awards is an annual event recognising outstanding contributions within the railway industry. We had the pleasure of filming the event for the fifth year running. With an occassion of this magnitude there were various challenges that we would have to overcome. An event of this size involves multiple nominees, presenters and entertainers, enforcing the need for meticulous planning as to ensure seamless recording of the event. The rail industry is known for its close-knit community, and the awards ceremony traditionally fosters a sense of camaraderie and celebration. We wanted to make sure we conveyed the values and spirit of the event.
The Approach
We chose a two person filming crew for the specific needs of the ceremony. In addition, we utilised a variety of equipment including dslr cameras, timelapse cameras, tripods, and gimbals. The combination of shooting methods made for a great variety of footage to work with in the edit. To make sure there was a glimpse of each award winner in the video, we maintained communication with the events planning team and found out the approximate location of each winner. Furthermore, the two person crew provided full coverage making sure we didn’t miss any of the 18 winners as they were announced in quick succession. We also gathered plenty of action shots of the guests, entertainment, decor and host Gethin Jones. Theses action shots would contrast nicely with shots of the awards winners.
The Result
Concluding the event, we began editing the video. After that, we sent a draft off to the Rail Media team. They requested some minor alterations to fully align the video with their values as well as adding some sponsor graphics. They were very pleased with the final product and we look forward to filming this momentous occasion next year.
Filming the 2023 Rail Staff Awards was a test of our creativity and resilience. We overcame the challenges posed by the logistical complexities and successfully delivered a compelling piece of media worthy of the event.
