the challenge
Network Rail required two durable time lapse systems to be installed at South Livingston Station, to capture their platform redevelopment work there. The work itself was vital for the station and required Network Rail’s orange army to work tirelessly over a 10 day period. Aside from new platforms, the work also included access ramp re-grading, lighting improvements, CCTV improvements and new shelter installations.
The end goal was to produce a final time lapse film which showcased Network Rail’s South Livingston Redevelopment work as a whole. This would allow Network Rail to showcase the redevelopment work to a wider audience.
the approach
We initially scheduled a conference call with members of the site team. This gave us more information about the site itself and the site team’s work schedule for the project. Following our consultation call we began to consider mounting points for our systems. Two different resources were utilised for this process. The first of these was Network Rail’s ‘Route View’, an aerial photography based application which allows users to view Network Rail’s lines and infrastructure across the UK. The second resource utilised was a variety of train cab videos provided to us by Network Rail.
We had to also make various other considerations when it came to our work on this project. The project required high risk planning and notably, the use of a MEWP (Mobile Elevating Work Platform) to get our systems into place. Our staff’s flexibility would also be key, as any system installations would have to be carefully timed around various rail possessions and overhead line works.
We made an initial site visit where we installed two durable time lapse systems. Our experienced and PTS trained staff were able to quickly and efficiently install the systems with minimal disruption to the work site. Both time lapse systems were powered off portable batteries, which meant that there was no hassle trying to locate a power source. Although there were some snowy weather conditions during the project, our in system heaters ensured that our time lapse systems would have no operational difficulties.
the result
We provided Network Rail with a unique client login which they could use to access live feeds of their work site, along with a complete archive of previous images shot. This allowed supervisor staff and key stakeholders to observe the South Livingston Station works in detail, without the need for site visits. At the end of the project we provided Network Rail with a final two minute time lapse video which concisely showcased the complete works. The film has since been used for promotional and documentary purposes.
